Radio DolfijnFM
Radio DolfijnFM Curacao
DolfijnFM is the most popular Dutch spoken radio station of the Dutch Antilles. The company started in 2002. In 2012 DolfijnFM moved to Sea Aquarium beach to a new easier said mind blowing and stunning location, 15 yards from the Caribbean Sea. The commercial and state of the art radio station is private owned. The entire building is round, a nice challenge in our lined world and minds. The assignment was to create a new interior design for the studio part only. We had 100% freedom in the concept, but had to keep track on the sound and technical requirements a radio studio normally has.
Our concept: a cozy, warm but underground feeling in a living room next to the beach, where people make live radio during daytime and @ night. Quite odd to the commercial company colors red, white and blue we mainly used silver, grey and black tones.
The studio is a 1/8th pie part, with an entire glass wall facing the beach. The perfect view for a radio DJ looking over the Caribbean Sea its guest and their beauty. We wanted to balance out the day view and the night atmosphere.
To make sure the sound reflection was reduced to a minimum we needed to mix and balance out the floor, walls and ceiling. The floor is partly double covered by a carpet and a groovy looking rug made from rubber tires designed by Nanimarquina. Next to the glass walls we added curtains from Chivasso fabrics in light grey. The wall behind the DJ is entirely covered with foam. This was originally yellow, so we painted/brushed it grey. On the ceiling we added these blocks in 70x70cm but in mixed heights. Behind the DJ we placed 2 pieces of 300cm high canvas wall decoration with rare pictured of famous artists, except one image just to make the visitors curious. The red & blue images are faded out on a sepia tone looking way, to get closer to the underground feeling, and to get away from the hard red en blue colors.
The in-height adjustable mix table is a huge and enlarged guitar plectrum of 2500 to 2400mm painted in silver. This offers the opportunity for any DJ to create his/her own height & comfort. Above the mixer we installed the Foscarini “Cage Mic” in black & white, 3 upside down hanging illuminating microphones. Not more than logic.
The furniture from Diesel Moroso, the coffee table Xraydio 2 Disk has 2 Technics SL1200 turntables and a mixer printed in the glass. The sofa is from Linteloo in a cotton/linen mix grey fabric. The living room lights are again from Foscarini, the “Rock in white and the “Graf” with prints from equipment. Behind the sofa we hang the company logo as a roller curtain, if needed the visiting artists can be photographed on the sofa incl. the DolfijnFM logo.
